Pathways to net-zero emissions from aviation

چکیده
International climate goals imply reaching net-zero global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by roughly mid-century (and greenhouse gas the end of century). Among most difficult to avoid will be those from aviation given industry’s need for energy-dense liquid fuels that lack commercially competitive substitutes and difficult-to-abate non-CO2 radiative forcing. Here we systematically assess pathways aviation. We find ambitious reductions in demand air transport improvements energy efficiency aircraft might up 61% (2.8 GtCO2 equivalent (GtCO2eq)) 27% (1.2 GtCO2eq), respectively, projected business-as-usual 2050. However, further depend on replacing fossil jet fuel with large quantities biofuels or synthetic (that is, 2.5–19.8 EJ sustainable fuels)—which may substantially more expensive. Moreover, 3.4 GtCO2eq removed atmosphere compensate forcing sector achieve Our results inform investments priorities innovation highlighting plausible aviation, including relative potential trade-offs changes behaviour, technology, sources removals. Decarbonizing is travel patterns technical economic constraints. Through nine holistic scenarios towards 2050, this study can a sector.

GHG emissions from international shipping and aviation
International shipping accounts for about 2 percent of annual global CO2 emissions. Aviation annually contributes to approximately 3.5 percent of the total human climate change effects, taking into account that several emissions from planes contribute. The emissions occur outside national control, and need broad international cooperation to be curbed. Voluntary agreements and technical standard...
متن کاملImpact of perturbations to nitrogen oxide emissions from global aviation
[1] The atmospheric response to perturbations in NOx emissions from global air traffic is investigated by performing a coherent set of sensitivity experiments. The importance of cruise altitude, size of the emission perturbation and geographical distribution of emissions is systematically analyzed using two global chemistry transport models and an off-line radiative transfer model. NOx emission...
متن کاملClimate Stabilization at 2°C and Net Zero Carbon Emissions
The goal to stabilize global average surface temperature at lower than 2°C above pre-industrial level has been extensively discussed in climate negotiations. A number of publications state that achieving this goal will require net anthropogenic carbon emissions (defined as anthropogenic emissions minus anthropogenic sinks such as carbon capture and sequestration and reforestation) to be reduced...
متن کاملOptimization of Syngas Production Systems Subject to Almost Net-Zero CO2 Emissions
This work describes two different configurations of syngas production processes using a combination of steam methane reforming (SMR) and dry reforming of methane (DRM). The ideal SMR+DRM process ensures the maximum product yield, the heat-integrated SMR+DRM process fulfills the maximum heat recovery, and the stand-alone SMR+DRM process effectively suppress net CO2 emissions. Through kinetic mod...
